‘Remember to be free’ is a portrait of a very good friend of mine, Aaron MacLachlan, in the weeks leading up to his departure from Berlin back to San Francisco. The film explores themes of identity, filmmaking, and the creative process, whilst also re-examining some of the mythologies and narratives surrounding artistic expression.
Although somewhat difficult to classify, as it could just as easily be seen as a film about philosophy, change, or friendship, in my opinion, it is ultimately about what lies in between all those things: between departures and what is left behind; between the desire to make art and the art that emerges from that intention; between the idea for a film and the film that emanates from it.
The film premiered at the first edition of the Clapham Film Festival in 2024, and has screened in festivals across Europe and South America. It was a finalist at the Europa Film Festival, the Capital Filmmakers Festival Berlin, and the Post-Cinema Festival, and won the ‘Best Sculpture Documentary’ award at the Indie Doc Pro Festival in Barcelona.
