'Mother' is a short film I made the year my mother was first diagnosed with uterine cancer and reflects my understanding and reactions to her illness during those initial months.
It follows her as she travels to Manila for my cousin's wedding, her first stint in hospital,
and ends with me cutting her hair prior to her first chemotherapy session.

My objective at the time was to create what Bresson describes as a ‘documentary of emotions', not just focusing on my mother, but also on the reactions of those around her.

The footage from ‘Mother’ has since been incorporated into a feature-length film called 'Confrontations', which I plan to complete in 2026. This film follows her journey from the beginning of her illness until shortly after her death.

While both films share some of the same footage, ‘Confrontations’ spans four years, whereas ‘Mother’ only covers four months. Consequently, the tone, emphasis, and emotional inflections in each film are quite different, with ‘Mother’ reflecting a certain naivety not present in the later work. Perhaps that’s why I thought it important for both works to exist alongside each other: so as to remember how things used to feel, prior to being injected with new symbols and meanings.
